The unusual blocks of granite

Carried by the glaciers during the last ice-age and deposited here when the glaciers retreated, these blocks can be found mainly in the upper Arve valley, in the Amorands forest in Combloux and two remarkable examples in Cordon.
The highest one can be found at Herney, at an altitude of 1550m. Another huge block has been used for tomb stones since the 1950s!
There has always been someone in the village who has worked the granite, using it to make stone basins, millstones or door frames.
